Tight deadlines and tough decisions are a daily challenge in your newsroom. This unique workshop, presented by the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation and hosted by the Ohio Association of Broadcasters, will help you make better, more confident decisions under pressure.
Among the topics covered in this highly interactive and practical workshop are:
- Learn how to make tough ethics calls on deadline
- Consider how and when to use disturbing images and/or graphic audio in your newscasts
- How to cover juveniles and other vulnerable people
- Discuss the ethics of “going live”
- Build guidelines for the use of confidential sources
- Develop ethical guidelines for video and audio editing
The workshop includes a live focus group where you will watch and listen to local citizens talk about journalism ethics. The workshop is facilitated by Carolyn Mungo, managing editor, KRIV-TV, Houston, and The Poynter Institute's Al Tompkins, co-author of the RTNDF's Newsroom Ethics workbook and DVD. Every participant will receive a copy of the workbook and DVD to use in helping to train their own newsroom.
This workshop is presented by the RTNDF through a grant from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. To maximize the benefit for newsrooms, multiple staff members from each station are encouraged to attend. The cost for the workshop is $40 for RTNDA or OAB members, and $50 for non-members. The hotel room rate is $119 per night; call 800-491-5717 or 614-475-7551 for reservations.
